Hello you lovely lot.

I'm just about sneaking this issue into July by the skin of my teeth. This one's going to be lighter on words but just as heavy on links this month β€” it's been a really busy one, starting a new contract with Google Arts & Culture, the kids finishing up school for the summer holidays, and me spending many, many hours watching the Tour de France ;)

So time has been in short supply. But excuses aside, there's still lots of lovely links to dive into. So, let's go!...

If you’d no longer like to receive these emails, you can unsubscribe. But if you’re choosing to stick around, thank you. πŸ™

Coffee tables

Absolutely love these fantastic side table animals by Marco Oggian β€” beautiful, unusual shapes with bold, colourful graphics. What's not to love?

I need to get saving my pennies to buy one β€” and am eyeing up Jumbo, the elephant.

Suiteru

Suiteru

Audiovisual performance

I'm currently learning to make music with a Maschine MK3, so when I saw these midi-reactive audiovisuals, I was pretty blown away.

It's made me think how fun it could be to link up a midi controller to graphics controlled by code that you could then mess with.

Suiteru is a musician/artist based in Kyoto and is clearly a master of his game.

Stephen McMennamy

Artist

These compositions by McMennamy are really great. He takes two (often unrelated) photos and fuses them together to make a new thought-provoking image.

Such a lovely idea and so well executed.

Pixelart Scenes

I get deep nostalgia for my teenage years when I see these pixelart loops by Aleksey.

I love how there's so much atmosphere in just a short animation, it's a real mood.

It also makes me want to fire up the old Super Famicom and play the 16-bit games of my youth.

Agathe Singer

Illustrator

Agathe Singer is an artist and illustrator from France with a background in graphic design. She often works in gouache, creating vibrant, colourful art with themes of femininity and nature.

Her work is absolutely impeccable with that beautiful painterly finish that can only be achieved through physical brushstrokes and mark making.

Watch

Tony Hawk: Until the Wheels Fall Off

Tony Hawk: Until the Wheels Fall Off

Documentary

This documentary is a really well put together picture of skater, Tony Hawk's rise to fame.

What I love about it – beyond all the amazing skating footage and interviews with the heroes of my youth – is that it's such a great example that success is only found through constant perseverance in the face of adversity and failure.

Anything that debunks the myth that talent is born gets my vote. And this documentary is proof that skaters are some of the most dedicated people on the planet.

We watched on (the very terrible) NOWTV.

The Bear

The Bear

TV Series

The Bear has been sat on my 'to watch' list for a good while and tbh I wish I'd jumped in much, much sooner β€” you lot were right, it's incredible.

A fine dining chef, Carmy returns to his home town to salvage the ailing sandwich shop of his late brother.

Christopher Storer's series is brilliantly written, shot and acted, and has a follow up second series just out that we're rapidly devouring.

We're watching on Disney+.

Colin from Accounts

Colin from Accounts

TV Series

This is a really good little Australian comedy series written by and starring Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer.

It's about two single-ish, complex humans who are brought together by a car accident and an injured dog. It's heartwarming comedy with a good dose of humanity which is just what we needed in our house.

And though it lost its way a little for me in episode seven, it thankfully refinds its footing in the last episode.

The Quiet Power of Introverts

The Quiet Power of Introverts

Animated Short

We seem less able to celebrate quiet, thoughtful people as much as we should imo.

Folks who take their time, think things through and listen before feeling the need to state their opinion. In a world that feels increasingly noisy, I often find myself wanting to withdraw.

In this short, animator Sofja Umarik looks at how introversion can be a real strength.

Tape Notes

Tape Notes

Podcast

A recent discovery, Tape Notes is a podcast about the art and craft of music production, featuring interviews with a wide range of super talented artists.

The interviews with Bicep, Chvrches and Fred Again.. are enough for me to make a whole-hearted recommendation if you want to learn more about the process of music making.

CACTI

CACTI

Album by Billynomates

I'm really late to the music of Tor Maries / Billynomates who rose to fame during the pandemic, but I was lucky enough to see her perform at Glastonbury.

She is brilliant and Cacti is a great (second) album featuring her unique vocals layered over synths, drum pads and guitars. Instant fave for me.

Ok, that's your lot this time so see you for the next one when we're back from our summer holidays. We're driving to France for a couple of weeks and I cannot wait. Will be very grateful for the break when it rolls around.

Till then, thanks as ever for reading β€” hope all is very well with you. πŸ™
