Hey 👋🏼

Welcome to this underwhelming second instalment of my newsletter. And if you’re new here since the first issue, cheers for subscribing. I daresay you’ll regret it, but I’ll do my best to persuade you otherwise.

I’m keen to point out this is currently just an experiment. But tbh I’m already feeling pretty good about it. It feels like it could easily become a habit that could stick and evolve over time. It also feels like a way more wholesome way to spend my time than on all those social hell sites. Anyway, let’s see. I’ll let you be the judge…

Work & Projects

Fable

Fable

Design

My main freelance contract at the moment is with NYC start-up, Fable. Fable makes in-browser motion design software and I’m helping them reframe their offering.

I’ve been enjoying working on the marketing side of design rather than product for the first time in a while, and just last week we dropped the first phase of work, an updated home page, with more updates rolling out over the coming months.

Learning Synths

Learning Synths

Interactive Learning

Learn about synthesisers in this magic site from Ableton. Play with a synth in your browser and learn all the different features to create your own sounds. This is an old favourite I’ve lost quite a bit of time to.

The History of User Interfaces

The History of User Interfaces

Online Guide

A nice little online catalogue of user interfaces that captures some key moments in the history of human-computer interaction.

Sophie Smallhorn

Sophie Smallhorn

Artist

I’m really drawn to colour and simplicity in art. And Smallhorn’s work has this in abundance. Love how she explores the relationships between colour, volume and proportion. And these are all real artworks, not renders.

Arc

Web browser

Sorry to keep banging on about Arc browser, but I love it and I have another batch of invitations if you’re interested to try. I thought it only right to share the love.

TV Series

We just finished this four-part BBC series and thought it was both brilliant and unbearable in equal measure. I recommend it with some trepidation as it won’t be for everyone — the pace and tension are so excruciating as to be almost unbearable. But there’s also a lot of humanity in there and we found it worth sticking with. And it has Sean Bean, so there’s that too.

The Rescue

The Rescue

Film

With all the talk of Thirteen Lives recently (about the Thai boys that got trapped in the cave), I was surprised that a lot of folk I’ve spoken to hadn’t seen The Rescue on Netflix. It’s an incredible documentary on the same subject by Free Solo directors, Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi.

Highly recommended if you’ve not seen it.

Unspoken Words by Max Cooper

Unspoken Words by Max Cooper

Album

I can normally take or leave most of Max Cooper’s stuff without the accompanying visuals, but Unspoken Words from earlier this year has really stayed with me – it’s got great pace and tempo, a proper vibe. Exotic Contents and Symphony in Acid are such good tunes.

The Inside Outtakes

The Inside Outtakes

Album

One of my favourite bits of pop culture to come out of the lockdown in 2020/21 was Bo Burnham’s Inside (very worth a watch on Netflix first if you’ve not seen it). Assuming you have already, this recently released playlist is a collection of audio outtakes and previously unreleased stuff from the production.

On a loop

Single

I’m a big fan of Ryan West AKA Rival Consoles. He’s a bit of a master of layering up beautiful, melodic and percussive soundscapes that build and recede. This recent one, Echoes is no exception – a total beaut.

So You've Been Publicly Shamed by Jon Ronson

So You've Been Publicly Shamed by Jon Ronson

Book

I’m a latecomer to the work of Jon Ronson having only been vaguely aware of him, but never having dipped my toes into any of his books. I’ve discovered I quite like his brand of journalism.

So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed explores the re-emergence of public shaming as an Internet phenomenon, particularly on Twitter. Despite being old in internet terms (it’s from 2015), there’s some fascinating human stories in here about misunderstanding, the behaviour of mobs and how some people are driven by outrage.
