Hey! Hope your 2023 is getting off to a good start. And if you're new here, thanks for signing up – I do hope you'll like it. If you change your mind, you can unsubscribe at any time.

Now I'm seven issues deep into this newsletter, it felt like it was time to make it a bit more official. So, as you'll see, I've given these emails a bit of a lick of paint and made a dedicated site where folks can sign up and view all previous issues. If you think anyone else might be into it, I'd really appreciate you sharing. And I may end up adding RSS for those folks that don't like additional crap in their inbox.

My new year has started well. Beyond getting the new site and emails set up for Converge, I've also just started a new contract consulting on design, branding and front-end work for a San Francisco AI start up called Adept. I'm excited to get that underway and will share where things end up going down the line.

Right, this is going to be a slightly more slimline issue than usual, so let's get to it…

Art + AI

As mentioned in earlier issues, I am a little wary of the application of AI to create art. But Franck Gérard's Pop Girls Series (that I picked up via my old Airside buddy Malika) really jumped out at me as something exceptional.

I don't know the full extent to which AI is being used here, but regardless, Gérard's art direction is phenomenal. A properly beautiful set of 60s/70s retro-futuristic pop fashion images.

Wang & Söderström

Wang & Söderström

Studio

I've been following the work of this creative duo for some time now and they never fail to inspire.

Blending a mix of analogue, physical and digital processes, W&S have a trademark style that is distinctly theirs regardless of the discipline or industry they work in.

Personalised soundscapes

I've used this app quite a lot lately to help get myself in a good flow for work. Whether that's writing code or sketching/designing.

It's a great way to create personal soundscapes to help you focus, relax, and sleep. Though I generally try to avoid the latter when I'm working ;)

How Many Plants is the advice you might not have known you needed, to help improve your upkeep and care of houseplants.

It's a beautifully made site featuring plant guides and detailed posts packed full of tips to make you a better houseplant cultivator. I for one need all the help I can get :)

Ivory

Ivory

iOS App

As Twitter sadly continues to flush itself down the toilet, I wanted to give people who might have ruled out Mastodon as a better alternative, a heads up on something.

Tweetbot creators, Tapbots have now gone all in on Mastodon, building an app called Ivory, set for general release soon. I'm using the Beta and it's as great as you'd expect. I think it's also very likely that Ivory will help iron out the UX kinks in Mastodon as they develop more features.

It's certainly worth keeping an eye out for its release. And maybe if you're a Mastodon sceptic, it might be worth a second look?

Illustrator & Artist

I've loved the work of Daniel Triendl since first encountering him about 7 or 8 years ago. It's colourful, friendly and always just so beautifully measured.

Since I last explored his projects, he's now amassed quite the portfolio and has pulled everything together in a wonderful new site.

Watch

Little America

Little America

TV Series

This is an interesting little collection of thirty minute-ish US immigrant stories, very varied and featuring folks from many cultures and backgrounds. Some episodes are much stronger than others, but the ones that resonate are often quite profound and get you right in the feels.

I found Season 1 to be the better of the two series.

Slow Horses

Slow Horses

TV Series

I was late to this series about a group of failed MI5 agents who become embroiled in a far-right terror plot. It's part spy thriller, part black comedy. Gary Oldman is fantastic (when is he not?) as the world-weary, functioning alcoholic, Jackson Lamb.

We're just heading into Season 2 after hoovering up the first series over a couple of nights. Top telly.

DJ Mix

Friend and former boss, Fred Deakin has put out another one of his fantastic mixes that he does at the end of each year. This one is excellent, full of soothing, bouncy basslines and uptempo positivity.

Plenty of good vibes to get your 2023 off to a good start.
